        An Asian native, the jute plant has long been the workhorse of the textile industry. Ancient Indian and Chinese civilizations relied on cloth woven from jute fibers for clothing, household goods and farm chores.

         In Europe, Jute was woven into Burlap, also called Hessian cloth, and was used for wrapping bales of cotton or hay and for stitching grain sacks for transporting wheat, barley and rye from farm to mill. In rural homes, Burlap did double duty as curtains and chair covers.

How To Eliminate Burlap’s Odor

Being Eco-friendly, however, doesn’t mean that it’s absolutely perfect in every way. There’s no getting around it… fresh burlap — while a thing of unparalleled beauty — has a earthy scent. The odor’s strength depends on how the cloth was finished, how it was stored and a variety of other factors. Our Burlap is refined and contains no additive or Formaldehyde which is found in many other Burlap fabrics being sold that are inferior quality or imported.

        Unless I need to use my Burlap right away, I simply place my new Burlap tablecloths and table runners in my screened in porch (in fair weather) or the garage (during the rainy season.) It takes about a week to notice a big difference. Those with sensitive noses sometimes say that a trace of ‘eau de Burlap’ can still be detected, but I don’t find this bothersome.

        If you are in a hurry to recover that old chair frame or use your new Burlap table linens, simply take a slightly damp washcloth and rub it over the fabric’s surface. Flip the cloth to the other side and repeat. The Burlap will need to dry off, but this usually only takes the better part of an afternoon. Dissolving a bit of baking soda in warm water before dipping in your washcloth is also helpful. Just be sure not to add too much baking soda as this can leave a white residue.

How To Clean Burlap

Although nearly carefree, there are times when your burlap may need laundering. Whether a wedding guest drips chocolate sauce on your burlap tablecloth or your curtains seem a bit dusty, the first step in cleaning Burlap is to give it a good shake and let it air out on a sunny day.  Sometimes this

is all it takes.

    Tougher stains can be removed by gently dabbing the surface with a washcloth dipped in a mixture of vinegar and warm water. Rinse with plain water.

        When all else fails, wash the Burlap in a sink or bathtub using a small amount of gentle liquid detergent. Feel free to swish around the water but resist active agitation. Agitation can cause the fabric to release fuzz (short fibers) or fray at the edges (which is why you WON’T want to put your Burlap into the washing machine in the first place!)

Creases and Curling

Burlap is an unfussy fabric and I personally think minor wrinkles add to its homespun appearance. If my Burlap linens need freshening up, I hang them on a clothesline and mist lightly with clean water. When dry, they look better than ever. Not only are the results beautifully crease-free, but line drying always makes me feel ecological virtuous.

        To prevent creasing, I usually roll my table runners around a paper towel tube before storing them. Since this isn’t practical for larger items, occasionally I find myself with an iron in hand. For best results, set the iron at the maximum steam setting but a medium heat, and iron both sides across the crease.

        For stubborn creases, choose a low heat setting and cover the area with cheesecloth. Press along the crease line on both sides, using the iron’s mister. Be patient, this really works!

From hand-rolled cigars to Hemingway… Havana, the much-celebrated capital city of Cuba, has become a legend rooted in the past. Fueled by classic films, my favorite Cuban restaurant, and memories shared by those who fled when Castro came to power, the Havana of my imagination revolves around, Spanish Colonial architecture, hip-swaying music and spirited cocktails.

Only 94 miles from Key West, the United States’ southern most city, pre-revolution Havana was regarded as the gem of the Caribbean. It’s unique architecture, beautiful beaches and anything goes lifestyle made it a popular destination for tourists, rum runners, movie stars and gamblers.

Whether a city resident or a fisherman, the sea is never far from sight or mind of the island’s residents. The heart and soul of Old Havana, the four mile long seaside boardwalk called El Malecon remains a favorite place to escape from the summer heat. Strolling past the architecturally diverse buildings painted in sun-washed pastels at sunset is a treasured ritual for locals.

Another ritual cherished by many is savoring the locally distilled rum. Quaffed straight or mixed into one of the island’s iconic cocktails, the expertly aged fermented sugar-cane beverage is a well-deserved source of pride. Rum also has a more serious side as an ingredient in the annual pilgrimage to one of Cuba’s most revered icons. Revered by both Catholics and Santeros, followers of the indigenous Afro-Cuban faith Santeria, Saint Lazarus attracts thousands of pilgrims each year.

Santeros, for whom Saint Lazarus also symbolizes the deity Babalu-Aye, frequently bring offerings of rum and cigars to the church. Catholic penitents, many dressed in burlap garments, arrive with candles, flowers and coins. Many also arrive with bloody feet or knees from walking barefoot or
crawling the 15-mles from central Havana to the shrine dedicated to the saint.

GET FIT

Ask any athlete what it takes to set a world record and they’ll probably tell you that years of training, perseverance and accurate measurements are equally important.

In choosing a table runner, careful measurement is key. To decide how long a runner to order to be placed on a bare table, add 10 to 14 inches to the length of the table. That gives you 5 to 7 inches of burlap to hang past the edge of the table at each end.

When I want a runner that is shorter than the table, however, I subtract 8 to 12 inches from the length of the table. This way the runner stops 4 to 6 inches short of the edge.

When using a runner on top of a tablecloth, the edges or the point of the runner should meet the edge of the tablecloth or end an inch or two above.

WINNING EMBELLISHMENTS

Sometimes an athlete needs a little something extra to become a champion. Here are a few extras that can turn an ordinary table runner into a knockout.

Fringe: Fringe burlap linens and burlap table runners with fringe look terrific paired with a base cloth, as the color below shows through. What You’ll Need For Each Tieback:
*3-5 napkin rings, depending on size of drape panels. Three rings is fine for each narrow panel. Wider panels may require five.
* Premier Burlap Table Linens 100% natural burlap or 4” wide natural jute ribbon
* Sharp scissors
*Ruler and chalk (optional)
* Length of masking or duck tape
* Velcro® peel and stick sticky back squares

Step 1:
Cut a piece of burlap or ribbon, 1/3 longer than desired length of tieback. Leaving 2” uncut at one short end, cut along length of burlap to create three equal strips. You may want to use a ruler and a piece of chalk to draw two lines along length of burlap or you can just eyeball it.

Begin to braid burlap loosely.

When about 1/3 of tieback is braided add first napkin ring by threading one “leg” of braid through ring. Continue braiding.

When braiding in complete, press a piece of tape on back of tieback across short edge to prevent braid from unraveling.  Attach two sticky back squares about ¼ inch end from edge of short ends. Place tieback around on drapes and arrange napkin rings as desired.

To change napkin rings, simply open tieback, remove tape, unbraid and repeat braiding with different napkin rings.

How China maintained a monopoly on the production techniques for Dupioni reads like a modern movie thriller. Terrified silkworm handlers worked in fear of being poisoned in order to keep the secret safe. Double-crossing monks smuggled cocoons along treacherous trade routes that few survived and imperial troops employed violence instead of lawyers to protect their country’s proprietary formula.

Advantages of dye-sublimation over other methods of textile printing:

Images are permanent and do not peel or fade.
Dye does not build up on the fabric.
Colors can be are extraordinarily brilliant due to the bonding of the dye to the transparent fibers of the synthetic fabric.
Truly continuous tones can be achieved that are equivalent to photographs, without the use special techniques such as half-screen printing.
The image can be printed all over the entire item, with no difficulty in printing all the way to the edges.
Finished image and fabric are smooth to the touch as the dye sublimation ink becomes part of the fabric with no raised areas.

Using blends of 4 colors allows us to create full color prints. The four basic colors used in printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Screen Printing

Screen printing is a great option if you are looking to order a larger quantity of tablecloths 12+, with a one or two color logo or printed design. Screen printing (see graphic below) is the traditional method of printing onto textiles and has been used very successfully for many many years and is probably the format that you are most familiar with. We do have a minimum order quantity of 12 pieces per logo when ordering screen printed tablecloths. We also offer pricing on a single color print, Black print on white tablecloth for example, or a two color print red and black on a white tablecloth. We do offer more than 2 color options for your ink with screen printing and will provide a price on request, however the more colors added the more expensive it becomes. 1 or 2 color are the most cost effective hence these being our primary options.Reason for choosing Screen Printing over other methods of textile printing:
